February 27 (Ex. 10; Lk. 13; Job 28; 1 Cor. 14)

In Luke 13 Jesus is told of a horrible slaughter of some Jewish worshipers by the hand of the Roman governor, Pilate. They were basically murdered while they were worshiping. On the heels of hearing this news Jesus brings up another calamitous event, namely, the falling of a certain tower that killed 18 people.  It is interesting to note how Jesus responds to both of these news-bites. In both verses 3 and 5 he says, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” What do you think he meant by saying that? It seems, does it not, like a pretty strange way to respond to such news.

Simply put, this is what I believe Jesus was saying. I believe He was saying, “This is what sin deserves, only much worse! These events are a merciful warning to you!” We live in a fallen world full of fallen people who stand under the judgment of God! We deserve the wrath of God being fully poured out on us. Bad things that happen in our life should remind us of this fact. The good news is God has made a way through His Son for us to escape this punishment that is our due. How then do we escape? REPENT! Turn from our love affair with sin and turn to Christ in white-hot adoration!
